Message	moves off the car, then yes, I'd ballpark it with a tape. I'd install it, get the wheels straight, center the steering wheel at the best position (that is: the position that would allow the most adjustment on both tie rods), then screw in the tie rod ends. From there, you can ballpark the allignment with a string wrapped around the tires, allowing for diff front and rear widths.
